Practical knowledge on common data management facilities and real time web services
Because we have specialised in the integration of traffic system we provide a low risk approach to developing your common data management facilities. Our technical solutions use modern tools and methods widely used within the IT industry. These provide the capability needed for both Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) and the Travel Information Highway (TIH) standards that are emerging as the underlying architectures for ITS in the UK.
Our Common Data Management Facility (CDMF) has been designed to help Local Highways Authorities integrate, manage and control urban traffic systems and urban ITS applications and to support their data management needs. It is a powerful means of migrating to new systems, by preserving existing investment and introducing new or replacement applications when they are needed and can be afforded. We will be delighted to demonstrate our solution through live applications in the Midlands and Preston.
Our experience in the UTMC compliant common database is un-matched. We undertook the original research in 1999, and have installed full-scale operational systems for seven Midlands local authorities and for Bristol City Council. The UTMC29 Demonstrator in Preston is now fully operational with Leicester due to follow by the middle of this year. We have an on-going program of work with Norfolk County Council to expand the common database bureau service supplied last year. Our Common Data Management Facility (CDMF) is used in these systems. These are the only installed systems with a full application server layer compliant with the UTMC technical specification. This feature is essential if you wish to integrate legacy and new UTMC applications from more than one manufacturer.
In Glasgow, we have recently completed a first phase which provides an integration platform as part of the BIAS project. From a single workstation using the “Integrated Management Facility”, the user now has control of the legacy fixed time UTC, the newly installed vehicle actuated control system and a fault management system for all assets including VMS and Car Park Management Systems.
We were one of the original developers of the Travel Information Highway (TIH) principles in exchanging data across systems and organisations and now provide long term support. The TIH has been a feature of our work for the Highways Agency and for Local Authorities. We are members of the TIH Management Group and head two of the TIH Working Groups. We bring this experience to this project. We have developed a range of tools for data exchange using the TIH. These allow our CDMF:
- to access other data sources such as Bus and Rail Information Systems
- to deliver data to other organisations such as Transport Direct or neighbouring Traffic Control Centres.
To deliver the Web service to travellers we use our standardised architecture along with design patterns, best practises and tools. This gives a Web service that is Scalable (so can cope with hundreds of simultaneous users not just a limited number), Extensible (can evolve to meet future requirements rather than be completely re-engineered) and Maintainable through a modular approach.
What we do best
The delivery of systems from inception through to maintenance and support using industry standards, tools and techniques within a quality-controlled environment is what we do best.
- We use experienced staff with relevant experience to ensure that our best practise is brought to bear on your project. Our objective is to work with you to deliver your needs on time.
- Our work is underpinned by a company culture enshrined in our Quality, Environmental and Safety system, which is qualified to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and the TickIT guide for software development.
- A key element of our delivery is our emphasis on testing to ensure that the system works first time on Day 1 when it is installed and commissioned.
- Following delivery we provide a maintenance service including help desk during office hours to provide an agreed level of service.
